Richard Walker, Professor of Geography and Chair, California Studies Center.
walker@berkeley.eduRichard Walker has been a Professor of Geography at the University of California, Berkeley for over 30 years. Walker has written on a diverse range of topics in economic, urban, and environmental geography, with scores of published articles to his credit. He is co-author of The Capitalist Imperative (1989) and The New Social Economy (1992) and has written extensively on California, including The Conquest of Bread (2004) and the prize-winning The Country in the City (2007). Walker has served as Chair of Geography, the California Studies Association, and the California Studies Center at UC Berkeley, and has won prestigious Fulbright and Guggenheim Fellowships.
Shannon Steen, Associate Professor of Theater, Dance, and Performance Studies and American Studies
steen21@berkeley.eduProfessor Steen is a specialist in critical race and performance theory, and writes on the intersection of Asian and African American racial determinations. Her book on this topic: Racial Geometries: the Black Atlantic, the Asian/ Pacific, and American Performance, will be published by Palgrave Macmillan in early 2010. Her anthology AfroAsian Cross-cultural Encounters, co-edited with Heike Raphael-Hernandez, was published by New York University Press in fall 2006. Her new project uses President Barack Obamas 2006-8 campaign to investigate the relationship between emotion, race, and performance in the realm of electoral politics.
George Lakoff, Richard and Rhoda Goldman Distinguished Professor, Department of Linguistics.
lakoff@berkeley.eduProfessor Lakoff is one of the world's best-known linguistic theorists and the discoverer of the mechanism of metaphorical thought. As a public intellectual, he has shown how progressives and conservatives think, alerted democrats to how framing works in political discourse, and advised office-holders and political activists throughout the country. His best-known book is Don't Think of an Elephant! Know Your Values and Frame the Debate.
